AI Girlfriend Apps vs Real Video Chat: An Honest Comparison
By the Privé Moi team. We run a video chat platform, so we are one of the options discussed; we say so where it matters.
An AI girlfriend app is software that plays a companion: it remembers what you tell it, is available at any hour, and never has a bad day. Real video chat is a live call with a person who can surprise you, disagree with you, and log off. They are not competing products so much as answers to two different needs.
We run a live video chat platform, so we are on one side of this. We have tried to write it so that someone who should pick an AI app reads that here, not after paying us.
What the AI apps actually are
Replika is the oldest of the current generation: a text-first companion with a persistent memory and an avatar, built around the idea of a relationship that develops over months. Nomi is similar in spirit with a stronger emphasis on memory and consistency of character. Candy AI and the newer apps lean toward generated images and romantic or adult role-play, with the companion's look and personality configured by the user.
What they share: the companion is always there, never tired, never busy, and shaped to you. Conversations are text or synthesized voice; the picture is generated. There is no second person in the loop, which is the whole appeal and the whole limit.
What real video chat actually is
A live call with a real woman is the opposite trade. She is there when she is online, not when you want her. She has a personality you did not configure. She can be funnier or sharper than you expected, and she can also be in a bad mood, end the call, or not be available tomorrow. On a verified platform you know she is a real adult who chose to be there; on a random site you do not even know that.
On Privé Moi specifically: you browse verified hosts, see each one's per-minute rate on her profile, watch live streams for free, and pay per minute only for a private one on one call. There is no memory feature, no always-on, and no configuring who she is.
Where the AI app wins
Availability. It is 3 a.m. and you want to talk; the app is there. No real person is, at least not reliably.
Continuity. The app remembers the name of your dog and the argument you had at work. A host you have called twice may remember you; software remembers everything.
Control. You never get rejected by the app, never get a bad day, never pay for a call that goes nowhere. For someone who wants a calm, predictable presence, that is not a small thing.
Cost predictability. Subscriptions are flat. Per-minute calls are not, and a long good conversation costs more than a short one.
Where real video chat wins
Surprise. Nothing an AI says can surprise you the way a real person does, because the AI is shaped by what you told it. The pleasure of a conversation going somewhere you did not steer it is only available with another mind in the loop.
Being seen. A real woman reacting to you in real time, on video, is a different experience from generated text that agrees with you. People notice the difference within a minute, even when they expected not to.
Honesty of the frame. You are talking to a person who is being paid for her time and knows it, on a platform that says so. There is no pretence of a relationship that software cannot have.
No dependence on a model update. Companion apps change their models and their rules, and users have watched a companion's personality shift overnight. A person stays the person.
| AI girlfriend apps | Live video chat (Privé Moi) | |
|---|---|---|
| Who you talk to | Software playing a configured character | A real woman, verified by ID and age check and team approval |
| Availability | Always | When she is online or scheduled |
| Memory | Persistent, remembers everything | Human; she may remember you, nothing is logged for her |
| Surprise | Low; shaped by your inputs | High; another mind in the loop |
| Video | Generated images, sometimes generated video | Live real-time video |
| Cost model | Subscription (varies by app) | Free to browse and watch streams; private calls per minute at the rate on her profile |
| Can say no | No | Yes |
| Best for | Comfort, routine, control, late nights | A real conversation, being seen, surprise |
Who should pick the AI app
Anyone whose main need is availability and continuity. If what you want is a presence that is there every night and remembers last night, software does that and people do not. The same is true if rejection or unpredictability is the thing you are trying to avoid: a real person cannot promise you either.
We would also say: if you are using an AI companion as a bridge back to talking with people, that is a reasonable use, and there is no reason a video chat platform should be the next step unless you want it to be.
Who should pick real video chat
Anyone who has tried the apps and felt the ceiling: the moment the companion agrees with you one time too many and you notice there is nobody there. Anyone who wants to be looked at by a person rather than described by a model. Anyone who finds a conversation more valuable because it could have gone badly and did not.
Pick a verified platform rather than a random site, because the point of leaving the software is to talk to a known real person, and a random site gives you neither known nor reliably real.
What we are not claiming
We are not claiming video chat is healthier, more real, or morally better than companion software. People use both for reasons that are theirs. We are claiming the two are different things, that the differences are the ones in the table, and that you should spend your money on the one that matches what you actually want.
